The Ultimate Guide to the Greek Tortoise

Wild turtles in Romania Testudo graeca

Turtles in Romania can be found in the wild, especially in the southeastern part of the country near the Danube Delta. In fact, many travelers are surprised to discover that Romania is home to several turtle species living in natural habitats. Specifically, one of the most interesting is the Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca), a protected species found only in specific regions of the country.

Turtles in Romania – Species Found in the Wild

There are four species of turtles in Romania, spread across different ecosystems. While large mammals like bears often attract attention, turtles play an important role in Romania’s biodiversity.

Among them, the Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca) is the only land tortoise species found in Romania.

Dobrogea remains the almost exclusive home of this species in Romania. If you are looking for the Greek Tortoise, visit these two primary locations:

  1. The Măcin Mountains: The oldest mountains in Romania, where the rocky and arid terrain provides the perfect home.

  2. The Danube Delta: Specifically the Letea Forest and the sand dunes near Sfântu Gheorghe.

Unlike the European pond turtle, the Greek tortoise prefers dry, sunny hills with low vegetation. During spring and summer, you can usually see them active between April and October. During this period, they bask in the sun and search for food.

Greek Tortoise Facts – Turtles in Romania

The Greek tortoise is a protected species. Unfortunately, habitat loss has made it vulnerable. Therefore, here’s what you should know:

  • Identification: They have a beautiful brownish shell, usually between 14 and 30 cm in length, and distinctive “spurs” on their thighs.

  • Diet: They are primarily herbivores, feeding on local wildflowers, grasses, and occasionally small invertebrates.

  • A Helping Hand: If you see one crossing a road, gently move it in the direction it is heading. This keeps it safe from traffic. Never take them home; they belong in the wild.
