Ciucaș Wilderness: Tracking Bear Prints to the Summit

Our hike yesterday in the majestic Ciucaș mountains was indeed a true feast for the senses!

We have started from Valea Stanii, an almost forgotten village where they don’t have any signal or electricity. It was a beautiful starting point as we could admire the Gropsoarele – Zaganu ridge.

We thought it was going to be an easy stretch, but as we begin our hike, we were huffing and puffing like a steam engine, because climbing the mountain is no walk in the park!

Hiking in Ciucas Mountains

On the way to the top, we have seen black goat, lynx and bear prints, some of them really fresh!

We’ve also seen a mama bear with the cubs at a reasonable distance as we were crossing the forest.

As we reached the top, it was hardly to see anything around us besides the valley below, a sea of white and gray. The mountains stretched out before us, their peaks shrouded in mist. The silence was broken only by the sound of the wind, and we felt completely alone in the wilderness.

The snow was sparkling in the fading light, and the forest came alive with the sound of the birds and the animals. The hike was a challenging but rewarding one, the winter landscapes of the Ciucas Mountains are truly a sight to behold.

As we make our way down, we have found Flammulina velutipes mushrooms that we cooked a delicious meal when we got home, please be aware that they can be confused with Galerina marginata that are poisonous!
