9 days summer adventure in the Carpathians – Retezat Mountains - 9 Days

Join us for a 9 days hiking adventure in Retezat Mountains, one of the most beautiful mountains in Romania. Thanks to its rich biodiversity, this area has been declared a National Park since 1935. 
Climb the two highest peaks in this mountain ridge (both over 2500 meters) and see the beautiful Bucura lake, the largest glacier lake in Romania. Besides these, enjoy spectacular views over glacier valleys and rough mountains and spend the evenings over a hot cup of tea near the chalet.

Important! 

– the guide reserves the right to make changes in schedule (e.g. change day 6 with day 4, or even modify the day program, in order to adapt to weather conditions, physical condition of the tourists and the day program

– for safety reasons the guide can cancel a day trip in case of bad weather

– in case of bad weather that would force us to cancel a part of our schedule, we will descend from Retezat mountains, return in Brasov and offer other options to climb on the mountains in Brasov area: Piatra Craiului Mountains, Bucegi Mountains, Fagaras Mountains, Ciucas Mountains, Piatra Mare Mountains. In this situation we include the same services as in “Services includes”, except: the transport from Brasov to the start of the hiking trail near the mountains and meals: lunch box and dinner, which are not included.

Day 1
Welcome to Romania

Arriving at Bucharest Henry Coanda airport where you are welcomed by your guide; transfer 3 hours to Brasov city, hotel accommodation.

After settling at hotel, we will check together the mountain equipment, then we will take a tour in Brasov’s old city center. Depending on available time we will see the monuments of the medieval past of the city, we have dinner, take a beer and you’ll be given more details about our tour in the mountains, since you will be accompanied by your guide.

Day 2
Preparations and transfer by van towards Retezat National Park

Breakfast at the hotel. Meet with your guide, check gear, make final preparations, embark in our private van, and head west to the small village called Ohaba. We will of course stop and take lunch. In Ohaba we change to another van, specialized for mountain roads, which will take us at an altitude of 1000m at Carnic settlement. Until here we spend a total time 6 – 7 hours from Brasov. From here we have 1.5 – 2 hours trekking to Pietrele Chalet at 1480m, in Retezat National Park. In the evening our hosts are waiting for us with hot dinner.

After dinner, accommodation in small chalets with 4-8 beds.

Day 3
Hiking up on Papusa peak 2508m (the 2nd highest summit) return to Chalet Pietrele

Have breakfast, then start from Chalet Pietrele along “Valea Rea” (The Mean Valley) to Papusa peak 2508 m., the second peak of the massif. We reach the peak after approximatively 5 – 7 hours from start, depending on weather conditions and training level of tourists. We will descend on the same route 4-5 hours or, if the guide decides it’s possible, there are other two descents available, but longer – 6 – 8 hours.

After descending to Chalet Pietrele we have dinner there.

Day 4
Hiking up Peleaga peak 2509m (the highest summit), return to Chalet Pietrele

Have breakfast, then start from Chalet Pietrele along Pietrele Valley to Curmatura Bucurei 2206 m. From here on the Custura Bucurei ridge to Peleaga summit – 2509 m, the highest peak of the massif. We reach the peak after approximatively 5 – 7 hours of hiking from the start, depending on weather conditions and training level of our guests. We will descend on the same route 4 – 5 hours; if the guide decides it is possible, there are also other descents available, but they are longer. One of these alternative descents is passing by Bucura Glaciar Lake, spread over 8.4 ha, the largest lake in the Carpathian Mountains.

After descending to Chalet Pietrele, have dinner, accommodation in small chalets with 4-8 beds.

Day 5
Stanisoara ridge; return to Pietrele Chalet

Have breakfast, then start from Chalet Pietrele along Pietrele valley, which we will leave soon for climbing Stanisoara ridge, one of the most beautiful and scenic ridges of Retezat Mountains. We will pass a few technical passages, so today it is necessary to wear harness and a helmet, but if necessary we can avoid some of these technical passages.

Descending by Stanisoara Valley or Pietrele Valley.

After descending to Chalet Pietrele, we have dinner.

Total time 6-10 hours.

Day 6
Retezat peak 2482m. Return to Chalet Pietrele

Breakfast, then from Chalet Pietrele start to Retezat peak 2482m. We take Lolaia ridge or Stanisoara valley to the summit which we reach in 4-5 hours. We will descend through the summer saddle along Stanisoara valley, back in 4-5 hours to Chalet Pietrele.

After descending to the chalet we have dinner here.

Day 7
Galesu Valley, Varful Mare Peak 2463 m; return to Pietrele Chalet

After breakfast at Pietrele Chalet we start by Galesu Valley, heading towards Varful Mare peak 2463 m. Here, we have a wonderful view over the main peaks and stretching over Retezat Mountains.

Descending by Galesu Valley, or Valea Rea Valley.

After descending to Pietrele Chalet , we have dinner.

Total time 8 – 10 hours.

Day 8
Descending from mountains. Transfer to Brasov City

After breakfast, we leave Pietrele Chalet, descending 1 hour to Carnic settlement. Here, the specialized mountain roads van will take us down to Ohaba village. Here we switch vans and start our journey of about 6 hours towards Brasov, including lunch.

Upon arrival in Brasov we settle to hotel, relax. In the evening we meet all together for a farewell dinner.

Day 9
Return home

Breakfast at the hotel (included), private transfer to Henri Coanda airport, flight home
