Day 1: Arrival in Bucharest, the Capital of Romania

Your adventure begins in Bucharest, a city that combines layers of history, from the elegant Belle Époque avenues to the monumental architecture of the communist era.

  • Arrival: Upon being welcomed at the airport, you will be transferred to your hotel and we will have some time to settle in.
  • Evening City Tour: Embark on a city tour: admire the impressive Palace of the Parliament (the second-largest administrative building in the world), stroll through the charming Old Town with its lively cafés and historic inns, and stop at Revolution Square, where Romania’s modern history was shaped.
  • Dinner: Dinner will be served in a traditional restaurant, where you’ll taste authentic Romanian dishes.
  • Overnight: Bucharest.

Day 2: Bucharest → Bran → Brașov

After breakfast, leave the capital behind and head north to the Carpathian Mountains.

  • First Stop: Travel to Bran.
  • Lunch: Served in a local restaurant.
  • Afternoon Visit: Continue to the legendary Bran Castle, known worldwide as “Dracula’s Castle.” Although its connection to Bram Stoker’s Dracula is tenuous, the fortress radiates a strong medieval charm and offers dramatic views over the surrounding mountains and valleys.

  • Arrival in Brașov: After Bran, heading to Brașov. Explore the history of the city and learn about the most important attractions. Brașov is one of Transylvania’s most beloved cities. Nestled at the foot of the Carpathians, Brașov is a medieval jewel with cobbled squares, Gothic architecture, and defensive walls.
  • Walking Tour: Discover the Black Church, the largest Gothic church in Eastern Europe, admire the colorful façades of Council Square, and stroll along the narrow streets lined with centuries-old buildings.
  • Free Time: Free time to enjoy the vibrant city center.

  • Dinner: Dinner in the city.
  • Overnight: Brașov.

Day 3: Brașov → Viscri → Sighișoara – Sibiu

Leave Brașov behind and travel into the heart of rural Transylvania.

  • Morning Visit: Your destination is Viscri, a UNESCO World Heritage village famous for its fortified church and for preserving Saxon traditions. Walking along the unpaved streets, you’ll see painted houses, horse carts, and villagers engaged in traditional crafts. This is also one of the villages where King Charles of the UK has invested in heritage preservation.

  • Second Stop: Continue to Sighișoara, one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval citadels and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and defensive towers create a fairy-tale atmosphere.
  • Guided Tour & Lunch: During your guided tour, you’ll climb the Clock Tower for panoramic views, walk along the fortified walls, and visit the house where Vlad the Impaler (the historical Dracula) was born. Lunch in the citadel.
  • Arrival in Sibiu: Then arrive in Sibiu, starting a walking tour of Sibiu’s Old Town. Explore the Large Square with its baroque buildings.
  • Dinner: Dinner at a traditional Restaurant.

Day 4: Sibiu → Alba Iulia → Turda → Cluj-Napoca

This morning, the journey continues through Transylvania’s heartland.

  • First Visit: Travel to Alba Iulia to visit the Alba Carolina Citadel, the largest fortress in Romania, beautifully restored and filled with stories of the 1918 Great Union. The ceremonial changing of the guards and the baroque gates add to the atmosphere.
  • Unique Attraction: Continue to Turda Salt Mine, one of the most spectacular underground attractions in the world. Here you’ll descend into vast caverns, where the salt walls glisten under artificial lights, and explore an underground amusement park with a Ferris wheel and boating lake.
  • Evening Arrival: In the evening, arrive in Cluj-Napoca, the vibrant capital of Transylvania. A guided city walk will reveal Union Square, St. Michael’s Church, and the mix of historical and modern architecture that defines the city.

Day 5: Cluj → Săpânța Merry Cemetery – Bârsana – Vișeu de Sus (Maramureș)

  • Stops: Visit Săpânța Merry Cemetery (Cimitirul Vesel) and Bârsana Monastery.
  • Lunch: Lunch break.

Day 6: Mocănița Steam Train

A day dedicated to a unique, nostalgic experience.

  • Train Ride: At Vișeu de Sus, board the famous Mocănița steam train (starting at 09:30 AM), which will take you on a journey through wild forests and mountain valleys. The train chugs slowly, offering time to enjoy the fresh air, the views, and the nostalgic atmosphere.
  • Afternoon: After the ride, you’ll continue through picturesque Maramureș villages, where wooden churches and carved gates adorn almost every household.
  • Dinner: Dinner and overnight in a traditional guesthouse.
  • Accommodation: Vișeu de Sus.

Day 7: Maramureș → Ciocănești → Bucovina Monasteries

After breakfast, travel east into Bucovina.

  • First Stop: Your first stop will be in Ciocănești Village, famous for its houses painted with colorful motifs inspired by traditional Easter eggs. The whole village looks like an open-air museum of folk art.
  • Painted Monasteries: Next, visit two of Bucovina’s UNESCO Painted Monasteries:
    • Moldovița Monastery – renowned for its vibrant exterior frescoes, especially The Siege of Constantinople, which covers the southern wall in dramatic detail.
    • Sucevița Monastery – a fortified monastery with thick stone walls and towers, decorated inside and out with biblical frescoes. Its monumental Ladder of Virtues painting is considered a masterpiece of medieval art.
  • Craft Stop: After the Monasteries visit the Black Ceramics Museum.
  • Lunch: Make a stop for Lunch.
  • Late Afternoon: Continue to the Putna Monastery, one of the most important spiritual centers of Romania. Founded by Stephen the Great in the 15th century, it houses the ruler’s tomb and remains a symbol of faith and national pride.
  • Dinner: Dinner included.
  • Overnight: Gura Humorului.

Day 8: Gura Humorului Monastery – Voroneț Monastery – Bicaz Gorge

Today features the artistic peak of Bucovina’s heritage.

  • Morning Visits: This morning, visit Humorului Monastery, then the famous Voroneț Monastery, often called the “Sistine Chapel of the East” for its deep blue frescoes and the celebrated Last Judgment scene.
  • Afternoon Arrival: Later, arrive in the Bicaz Gorge area, a cozy town surrounded by rolling hills and forests, the perfect base for exploring the area. Enjoy a relaxed evening in this charming mountain settlement.
  • Dinner: Dinner included.

Day 9: Bicaz Gorges → Red Lake – Sinaia

A day of spectacular natural geography.

  • Mystery Lake: Nearby lies the mysterious Red Lake (Lacul Roșu), created by a natural landslide in the 19th century. The flooded forest, with its tree trunks emerging from the water, gives the lake a unique and haunting beauty.
  • Lunch: On the road stop to have lunch.
  • Afternoon: Heading directly to Sinaia.
  • Dinner: Dinner included in Sinaia.

Day 10: Sinaia → Bucharest (Departure)

The final day features a royal masterpiece before concluding the tour.

  • Morning Visit: In the morning after breakfast, visit Peleș Castle in Sinaia. Built in the late 19th century by King Carol I, Peleș Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. Its Neo-Renaissance architecture, fairy-tale towers, and lavish interiors make it a true gem. Inside, visitors can admire the Hall of Honor, the royal library with secret doors, and one of the first cinemas in Europe.
  • Departure: Then transfer to Bucharest Airport (OTP) for your international departure.
