Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Romania

You will meet with your guide at Henri Coanda international airport in Bucharest. He will transfer you to your accommodation in Brasov city. If time allows, you’ll do a tour of Peles Castle in Sinaia, considered one of the most impressive castles in Europe, a masterpiece of German New – Renaissance architecture.

As soon as you arrive in Brasov city, you’ll be taken to your hotel.

Day 2: Brasov – Magura Village 

After breakfast, you’ll do a tour of the Old Town of Brasov (medieval bastions, cobbled streets, elegant 18th and 19th century civic buildings and houses, The Black Church with its Gothic architecture, all surrounded by the green Tâmpa Mountains).

 Lunch at one of the Romanian traditional restaurants.

In the afternoon, you will be transferred to Magura, one of Romania’s prettiest villages, 1,000 meters up in the mountains, followed by a visit to one of the local manufacturers.

In the evening, you’ll be taken to your accommodation in the village.

Day 3: Magura Village – hike in Piatra Craiului National Park

Hiking tours in Transylvania - hiking in Magura villageAfter breakfast, you’ll spend a memorable day in Piatra Craiului, one of the most challenging massifs in Romania, together with a specialized mountain guide.

Depending on your physical condition, you will choose one of the optional routes available. Lunch at Curmatura Chalet, one of the most scenic huts on all our hiking tours in Transylvania. 

In the evening, transfer back to Brasov city.

Day 4:  Brasov – Viscri – Sighisoara

The Clock Tower in SighisoaraAfter breakfast, you’ll depart to Viscri Village where you’ll have the chance to go for 1 hour traditional horse ride drawn carriage through the village, followed by a visit to a local blacksmith and to see how horseshoes are made (you can even take one home!).

Traditional lunch and transfer to Sighisoara city, with its famous UNESCO World Heritage medieval city center, also considered one of the most beautiful and preserved medieval towns in Europe. (see the Clock Tower-the symbol of the town) 

In the evening you’ll be taken to the hotel in the city.

Day 5:  Sighisoara – Brateiu – Biertan 

After breakfast, you’ll be taken to Brateiu town to meet an authentic gypsy group, the coppersmiths (Căldărari in Romanian language). They live from producing and selling copper objects like: kettles, cauldrons (like the one from Harry Potter), alembic for distillation of țuica (traditional Romanian brandy), plates. Gypsy copper objects

You can also try out their clothes to get a glimpse of how you’d feel as a gypsy :).

After this experience, on our way to Brasov you’ll visit the Biertan fortified church, one of the most imposing and solidly fortified peasant fortress from Transylvania (UNESCO Site).

If time allows, you’ll also visit Racos ( the basalt columns, 15 meter high rock structures, the Emerald Lake with its unique looking color and last but not least, the volcanic canyon). 

In the evening, you’ll be staying at the hotel in Brasov.

Day 6: Day trip and Bear Watching in the Land of Volcanoes

Bear watching tour in RomaniaIn the morning, you’ll be picked up by your guide from your accommodation in Brasov.

After an 80 kilometer drive,  you’ll will discover the beauty of St. Anna Lake in a 30 minute easy walk, followed by a 30 minutes hike up to the Puturosu Cave (The Smelly Cave), the biggest natural gas bath in Europe. 

Back at the car you can have lunch in a nearby restaurant and enjoy the wonderful scenery. 

The highlight of the trip comes in the afternoon, when you will go deep in the forest with an experienced ranger and see the Eurasian brown bears in their natural habitat, in the wild. Once you arrive in the safe bear hide, taste a shot of palinka (traditional Hungarian spirit) and wait for the bears to come just a few meters in front of you. Because the bear hide is specially built, the bears cannot see you through the windows and you can take amazing photos of them.

In the end, just before darkness falls, you will return to the car and your guide will drive you back to Brasov and drop you off at your accommodation.

Day 7: Wildlife tracking in Putna Vrancea Natural Park

Very early in the morning, your guide will pick you up from your accommodation in Brasov. After a 2 hour transfer to Vrancea county, in Putna Vrancea Natural Park, you will begin your hike in the Putna Vrancea Natural Park, a protected area which has the highest density of wild animals in Romania. 

After meeting the ranger, you ‘ll be hiking one of the few routes that are in the area. The trails are unmarked, so you pass through very wild and remote places, looking for animal tracks and marks.

You’ll be accommodated at one of the houses in the nearby villages.

Day 8: Cheile Tisitei 

Hiking tours in Transylvania - hiking in Tisita Gorge canyonEarly in the morning, your guide will pick you up  and you’ll go through Cheile Tisitei (Tisita Gorge), a fabulous 8 kilometer gorge carved by Tisita river. You will encounter unique rock formations, local flora and fauna. You will cross old bridges and under steep cliffs, until you reach the Big Tunnel, built here to make way for the old narrow gauge railway. After a break, you will go back on the same way, admiring the high cliffs and the natural landscape. Once back to base, your guide will take you back to Brasov and drop you off at your accommodation in Brasov.

Day 9: Transfagarasan Road / Paragliding  – Seven Ladders Canyon – Piatra Mare Peak

Hiking in Tisita Gorge canyon ! The famous Transfagarasan Road opens after the 1st of July, due to the weather.

If weather conditions are good, most likely the authorities will decide to have it open earlier. In this case we can’t guarantee you’ll be able to see it in the time period that you specified. But we got you covered for this day with some amazing experiences:

After breakfast, you’ll see Brasov and the surrounding area in this thrilling one hour paragliding experience, together with your licensed tandem pilot. 

After this, you’ll go through the Seven Ladders Canyon, one of the most interesting natural scenery in Romania.Then you’ll continue your hike up to the Piatra Mare hut at 1630 meters (where you can have a well deserved lunch). From the top, you will have fantastic views over the Brasov area and the surrounding mountains: Bucegi, Piatra Craiului, Baiului, Postavaru, Ciucas.

Then down to base, and your guide will drop you off at your accommodation in Brasov.

Day 10: Day trip to the Bison Reserve & traditional lunch

Urlatoarea waterfallAfter breakfast, your guide will take you 40 kilometers away from Brasov, in the small village of Acris, in Vama Buzaului commune, where you can find the Bison Reserve, an an area of about 12 hectares you can spot these majestic animals feeding or just spending their time walking around. Next stop will be at Urlatoarea waterfall (it means ‘the raging one’). In the end, you will have a well-deserved lunch at a local household. Your hosts will prepare a three course meal from local organic products. Taste the palinca – our national drink – and enjoy quality time in the courtyard. After the feast, you will be taken back to Brasov and dropped off at your accommodation.

No activities scheduled for the evening time, in case you want to so some shopping or have some time on your own.

Day 11: Transfer back to Henri Coanda international airport in Bucharest

You will meet with your guide at your accommodation in Brasov and he will take you at Henri Coanda international airport in Bucharest.
