Cycling tour around Brasov - cycling in Poiana Marului

Cycling tour around Brasov – cycling in Poiana Marului

After a short transfer to the town of Zărnești, situated at the foothills of the Piatra Craiului mountains, we begin our tour with a short climb then descend towards Poiana Mărului, where we can have a nice cup of coffee or tea. We continue our journey to the village of Șinca Nouă and leave the asphalt road for a couple of km to see the abandoned railway viaducts of Podu Negru (167,30 meters) and Podu Ilii (99,40 meters). These were the first viaducts in Romania that had steel reinforced concrete arches and were built between 1906-1908. Together with the Diana tunnel (535 meters), the two structures were a part of the old Homorod – Șinca Nouă railway, abandoned in 1948 due to safety issues.
After about 5 kilometers we return to the paved road and continue towards Șinca Veche, where we will visit the Cave Monastery, a mysterious place, renowned for its mystical atmosphere. Our next stop is Ohaba, where we can see the oldest water powered mill in the Făgăraș area, dating from 1873, that is still working. After seeing how mill stones work, we continue to Perșani and after a last effort we end the day. Overnight near Vlădeni.

Day 3: Vlădeni – Feldioara – 62 km

After breakfast we begin cycling on the paved road to Vlădeni then turn left towards Dumbrăvița, where we can see the nearby lakes, also called ”The Carpathian Delta”, thanks to the huge number of birds that seek shelter here during the warm season. The area has been declared a protected area by the Romanian authorities. We continue to Crizbav, leave the paved road and begin ascending on a forest road up to the ruins of the Heldenburg Citadel, built in 1080. It is situated at an altitudine of over 1000 meters, on an isolated cliff from where you can see one of the most beautiful panoramas in this area. This view and the fact that the citadel is relatively hidden was the main reason why the teutons decided to built it. After a well deserved break, we begin the descent to Feldioara and Rotbav. Overnight in Rotbav.

Day 4: Feldioara – Valea Zălanului / Malnaș – 59 km

We cycle along the main road to Măieruș, across the Olt river continue on a low traffic road to Micloșoara, where we visit the Kalnoky Castle and see the beautiful traditional houses that had attracted Prince Charles. We continue to Aita Medie and leave the paved road behind. From now on, the forest road goes through a river for several times but it isn’t deep so we shouldn’t have any problems. We finally reach the isolated village of Valea Zălanului, where Prince Charles himself had renovated some houses and turned them into guest houses. During the last days of May, he usually comes here for a couple of days to enjoy the wild meadows filled with multicoloured flowers. A more accesible accomodation is in Malnaș Băi, situated a few kilometers away from Valea Zălanului. Because it’s possible to arrive in Valea Zălanului at the same time with Prince Charles, the guest houses might not be accesible for tourists. Overnight in Valea Zălanului (if the guest houses are open for tourists) or in Malnaș Băi.

Day 5: Valea Zălanului / Malnaș – Băile Balvanyos – 35 km

Road in Baile Balvanyos

This is the shortest day of our tour but not necessary the easiest. After breakfast we begin cycling towards Bixad and from here, we have a 12 kilometre ascent up to an altitude of over 1000 meters, where we will visit the only volcanic crater lake in Romania, St. Ana Lake. After a tour of the lake we cycle to Băile Balvanyos, check-in at the hotel and hike in the nearby forest to Puturosu Cave and other attractions. Or, if you want to relax, you can enjoy the beautiful spa, the pool and the facilities that the hotel has to offer. Overnight in Băile Balvanyos.

Day 6: Băile Balvanyos – Covasna – 46 km

On this day we leave the quietness of the forests and cycle across the Târgu Secuiesc depression on an almost flat road.
We have breakfast, fill our bottles with natural mineral water from the springs in Băile Balvanyos and pedal on a beautiful road to the town of Târgu Secuiesc. As soon as we leave the forest, we enter Turia, a village founded in 1307. We continue our journey to Târgu Secuiesc and visit a small terracotta factory that still produces ceramic tiles for stoves. Here, each tiles is hand crafted and shaped according to old models and patterns. After the visit we continue towards the town of Covasna and visit the old Reformed Calvin church in Zăbala, one of the biggest historical buildings in the area. Once in Covasna, we visit the city centre, where we visit the Devil’s Pit, a natural spring of muddy mineral water, proof of the volcanic activity in the area. From here, we have 3 kilometers to the forest where we can see a beautiful narrow gauge railway that is still being used for tourists. Overnight in Covasna.

Day 7: Covasna – Vama Buzăului – 48 km

Cycling tour around Brasov - Ciucas mountains

We begin the day with a nice relaxed ride through the villages of Chiuruș, Păpăuți and Zagon and begin a steep 5 kilometer climb throught the forest. Once arriving at an altitudine of around 900 meters, we have a short but fast descent to Barcani, from where we have a nice view over the area and the Ciucaș Mountain. We continue on the paved road to Vama Buzăului, where we will visit the Bison Reserve. If we still have time, we can visit the Urlătoarea waterfall. Overnight in Vama Buzăului.

Day 8: Vama Buzăului – Brașov – 46 km

This will be the last day of your cycling tour around Brasov.

After breakfast we can go and visit the Urlătoarea waterfall, if we haven’t done it the day before. We continue on a dirt road and after a few kilometers, we have a steep 1,5 kilometer climb. We take a break and begin a long but difficult descent on a dirt road, full with rock and boulders, to the village of Zizin. From here, we have another 20 kilometers on a paved road to Brașov. Overnight in Brașov.
