You don’t have to be an adrenaline junkie to enjoy the view of a city from above. And when the city is a mountain one, like Brasov, paragliding is one thing that comes to mind.
Luckily, very close to Brasov there are few paragliding spots where you can try a nice tandem paragliding flight. Bunloc (a.k.a Bolnoc), in Sacele, is just 10 minutes drive from the city centre.
You can reach Bunloc by car, by taxi (a taxi ride from the city centre is about 20-25 LEI, that’s 5 Euro) or by bus 17 and walk about 10-15 minutes.
Bunloc has a cable car that was built more than 30 years ago for the ski slope, however, since the ski slope was not maintained and is now just a forest the ski-lift is used just for paragliding pilots. A ride up by ski lift takes 15 minutes and costs 20 Lei (4.5 Euro). If you want to fly here you will meet the pilot at the cable car departure station, close to the parking lot (we can drive you here if you decide in advance and book the flight with us). As we go up by ski lift, the view over the city and the surrounding area opens up and your pilot can show some of the surrounding mountains. At the take-off place the pilot will brief you on what to do for take-off and landing and will take care of the rest. with good north-westerly wind you run a few steps and….up in the air you are, enjoying the freedom of free-flying. No engine noise, but still flying like birds while filming yourself with a GoPro camera. A normal initiation flight will take 10-15 minutes, but if you talk to the pilot you can choose a long flight, up to one hour or even more. Some of us are paragliding pilots and even flew for two hours, including going up to the cloud base at 2300 m.a.s.l.
The landing is near the car and you’ll be here roughly one hour after you left from the car.
Postavaru is another place for paragliding near Brasov. There is a cable car from Poiana Brasov, so we don’t have to hike up the mountain. There are two takeoffs possible, depending on the direction of the wind.
A nice place to fly is Magura Branului, a bit farther away from Brasov and you will need to hike 30 minutes from the car to the takeoff place. However the views are well worth the effort. On a decent day the pilot will take you over the white limestone ridge of Piatra Craiului. Quite impressive, I should say.
