Discover Saint Anna Lake: The Hidden Volcanic Heart of Romania

View of Saint Anna Lake Romania, surrounded by dense pine forests

When exploring the Eastern Carpathians, one of the most unique and breathtaking natural wonders you must visit is Saint Anna Lake Romania. This emerald-green volcanic lake, surrounded by dense pine forests, is a true geological rarity. It offers visitors a peaceful escape into nature and a profound glimpse into the region’s fascinating volcanic history.

Saint Anna Lake, Romania: The Hidden Volcanic Heart

Imagine a crystal-clear lake, fed purely by rainwater, cradled within a massive extinct volcano. As you will discover, that’s Saint Anna Lake.

  • Geological Rarity: At 950 meters, this lake remains as a relic of an eruption from roughly 11,000 years ago. Consequently, its waters are so unique that people once considered them almost distilled!
  • Pilgrimage Site: The lake, named after Saint Anne, is steeped in local legend. For centuries, it has drawn local pilgrims.
  •  Visitor Alert: The ecosystem here is extremely fragile. Therefore, you must avoid swimming in the lake to preserve its rare purity.

Mohos Peat Bog: The Twin Crater near Saint Anna Lake Romania

Just a short distance from the lake lies its fascinating twin: the Mohos Peat Bog. Once a much larger lake, however, this area is gradually filling in, creating a rare and visually striking marshland.

    • The Carnivorous Plant: This is your chance to spot unique flora! For example, keep an eye out for the Sun Dew (Drosera rotundifolia), a small, insect-eating (carnivorous) plant that thrives in this specialized environment.

    • The Bear Capital: This region is a hot spot for wildlife. Additionally, if you’re a nature photographer, several highly-regarded bear hides operate nearby, offering some of the highest-quality bear-watching tours in the Carpathian mountains.

Puturosu (The Smelly Cave): Therapeutic Mofetta Cave near Saint Anna Lake

For a truly bizarre and powerful experience, take the marked 20-30 minute trail from Balvanyos Resort to the infamous Smelly Cave. As you will discover, this is a natural mofetta (a cold gas vent) used historically for therapy.

CRITICAL SAFETY WARNING: READ BEFORE ENTERING

The cave emits extremely high concentrations of toxic gas (CO2 and Hydrogen Sulfide). Crucially, you MUST observe this rule:

  • Keep your head and upper body strictly ABOVE the visible yellow line on the walls. Because the toxic gas concentrates at the bottom, breathing it can be fatal in minutes. Leave children and metal objects (like phones) outside.
  • The Benefit: Nevertheless, if you adhere strictly to the safety rules, the gases below the yellow line offer an intense therapeutic effect, which locals traditionally used to treat circulatory disorders.
  • The Side Effect: Furthermore, many visitors report a strong, warming sensation in the lower body—a strange but unique experience!

Relax and Recharge: Healing Baths & Hot Springs

After exploring the volcanic landscape, take advantage of the numerous natural healing water sources in the area:

  • Apor Girls’ Baths: Recommended for skin conditions and improving circulation.
  • Balvanyos Resort Spa: If you need modern comfort, this resort is renowned for having one of the best spas in Romania.

Plan Your Visit: Essential Tips for Saint Anna Lake Romania

  • Where to Stay: Check out the luxurious Balvanyos Resort or look for cozy local guesthouses in the nearby town of Băile Tușnad.

Where to Eat (Local Gem)

When planning your meals near the lake area, you have three excellent options based on proximity and the quality of local cuisine:

  1. Closest Option: Restaurant Cetate (Balvanyos) This is the most convenient choice, located in the Balvanyos area.  It offers traditional meals and is highly accessible.

  2. Top Quality (Bixad): Ciuc Abroad Inn For guaranteed high-quality, authentic food, we highly recommend the Ciuc Abroad Inn (Hotarul Ciucului) near Bixad (a 20-minute drive). They are known for their good cuisine and excellent service.
